Health and Safety policy

Man and Van Finchley Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Finchley is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risk, preventing injury and protecting property during all moving and delivery operations.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary objectives are to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health, and to ensure that all removal tasks are carried out safely and efficiently. We aim to continually improve our safety performance by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures that are appropriate to the nature and scale of our work.

Legal Duties and Responsibilities

We recognise our duty to comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice applicable to the removals and transport sector. Management accepts overall responsibility for the implementation of this policy, the provision of appropriate resources and the monitoring of performance. All employees and contractors are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions, and to cooperate fully with company procedures.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before each removal or delivery task, we assess the risks associated with the property, access routes, items to be moved and any specific customer requirements. This includes consideration of manual handling demands, staircases, narrow passages, parking and loading arrangements, weather conditions and any fragile or high-value items.

On the basis of these assessments, we implement safe systems of work, including agreed lifting techniques, use of handling equipment, appropriate staffing levels and clear communication between team members. Where necessary, work is postponed or rescheduled if conditions present unacceptable risks.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a significant element of our business, and we take particular care to minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. Staff receive instruction on correct lifting and carrying techniques, including team lifts, use of rest breaks and recognition of personal limits.

Where reasonably practicable, we use handling aids such as trolleys, dollies, removal straps, ramps and other equipment to reduce the physical strain on workers and to protect customer property. All equipment is selected for its suitability, inspected regularly and removed from service if found to be defective.

Vehicle Safety and Loading

Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition in line with manufacturer recommendations and legal requirements. Drivers are responsible for carrying out basic pre-use checks and reporting any defects promptly for corrective action.

Safe loading practices are essential to protect both our teams and other road users. Items are loaded to maintain stability, prevent movement in transit and avoid overloading. Loads are secured using appropriate restraints and placed to allow safe unloading at the destination. Drivers are given clear routes and are expected to comply with all traffic laws, speed limits and parking regulations.

Protection of Customers, Public and Property

During removals and deliveries we take reasonable steps to ensure the safety of customers, visitors and members of the public. This may include cordoning off work areas where appropriate, using warning signs or verbal instructions, and carefully planning access routes.

We handle customer property with care to avoid damage, using protective coverings such as blankets, floor protectors and corner guards where required. Large or awkward items are moved by sufficient personnel and, where necessary, disassembled and reassembled to reduce risk.

Information, Instruction and Training

We provide our staff with appropriate information, instruction and training to carry out their work safely. This includes induction training on company procedures, manual handling guidance, safe vehicle operation and use of handling equipment.

Additional training or refresher sessions are provided when new equipment, techniques or risks are introduced, or where monitoring indicates that further instruction is required. Staff are encouraged to raise any concerns about their own competency or the safety of a particular task.

Consultation and Communication

We believe that effective communication is essential to maintaining high health and safety standards. We consult with staff about working methods, equipment and any incidents or near misses that occur, and we welcome suggestions to improve safety practices.

Customers are informed of any relevant safety considerations related to their move, such as the need to keep access routes clear, keep children and pets away from work areas, and advise us in advance of any special risks or fragile items.

Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses

All accidents, incidents, damage and near misses are to be reported to management as soon as possible. We investigate these events to determine root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Where necessary, we review our risk assessments, work methods and training in light of the findings.

Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work

We recognise the physical nature of removal work and the importance of fitness for duty. Staff are expected to report any health conditions, injuries or medication that may affect their ability to work safely. We do not tolerate the use of alcohol or illegal drugs during working hours, and staff must not work if impaired by any substance.

Reasonable steps are taken to provide adequate rest breaks, drinking water and suitable arrangements to manage work in hot, cold or wet weather, taking into account the practical realities of removal schedules.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry guidance, our operations and lessons learned from experience. We are committed to ongoing improvement of our safety performance, recognising that a strong health and safety culture is essential to delivering a reliable and professional man and van service.

All employees and contractors working with Man and Van Finchley are required to familiarise themselves with this policy and to follow the procedures and instructions arising from it at all times.
